John J. Sheehan Sr. 86, of East Falls, died on July 8, 2021.
Beloved husband of Ellen Sheehan (nee Kelley) with whom he celebrated 56 years of marriage. Born on February 27, 1935 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Sheehan (nee Ward).
John was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Preparatory High School, class of 1952, in Philadelphia. St. Joseph’s College in 1956 and The United States Navy Officers Candidate School.
After serving in the Navy for three years, John spent most of his career working as a Certified Public Accountant for the City of Philadelphia Office Of The Controller.
John was an active member of the Destroyers Escort Sailors Association, where he spent many years as the Treasurer. He also wrote a book about his experiences during his service in the Navy, Memories of My Three Years Aboard Destroyer Escort.
John is survived by three children, Ann Marie Matekovic (John) of Collegeville, John J. Sheehan Jr. (Christy) of Collegeville and Ellyn Taylor (Charles) of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren, Katelyn and Laura Matekovic, Casey and Megan Sheehan and Charles, Kelley and Joseph Taylor; his sister, Sr. Kathleen Sheehan of Flourtown, his brother Rev. Joseph A. Sheehan of Bethlehem and many nieces and nephews.
His Visitation will be held at St. Bridget’s Church, 3667 Midvale Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19129 the morning of Friday, July 16, at 9:30 am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am.
Interment private.
Donations in John’s memory may be given to St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, 1733 West Girard Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19130; attn Development Office.
