David L. George–8/30/2023

David L. George, age 75, formerly of Elkins Park, Pa., died August 30, 2023. He is survived by his son Alex, his stepson Eric Watral, his former spouse, Patty Gerrity; his sisters, Patty Reed (Tom) and Diane George and several nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Rebecca Gerrity.

David earned his B.A. from the University of Michigan, an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from Temple University. He taught economics at La Salle University for 34 years. As a teacher, David was known for encouraging students to think outside the box. He liked to engage students and colleagues in discussions on a wide range of topics. With  friends and colleagues, David would share his own strong opinions and, usually, he would listen to other people’s views, always eager to learn.

David was an accomplished scholar. He published two books, about 30 scholarly articles, and 20 book reviews. He was a longtime member of the Association for Social Economics (ASE), including being this association’s president in 2005. David was honored by this association in 2011 with the prestigious Thomas F. Divine Award, an annual award that recognizes ASE members who make significant contributions to social economics. David served on the editorial board of the Review of Social Economy and the Journal of Socio-Economics for many years.

At La Salle University, David was an engaged member of the faculty senate, winning the Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Award in 2012.

During leisure time, David enjoyed classical music, opera, going to the movies, playing Scrabble and participating in political discussions. David was an active member of the Foulkeways Community.

David’s Memorial Service will be held at Foulkeways, 1120 Meetinghouse Rd., Gwynedd, PA  19436, on Sat. Sept. 30th at 2 pm.
